Mooncake festival is here again...but, can I eat?

2 years ago, Harbour City Restaurant had sugar free mooncake. Very yummy. But due to the downturn, the restaurant closed down and no more suger free mooncake. *sob sob*
Finally this year, I found sugar free moon cake again!!!!!
Was at Vivo City this afternoon and there was a mooncake fair there....Many restaurants and hotels are there to showcase mooncakes prepared by their top chief.
I stopped by this stall from "Hong Kong Mei Xin Mooncakes" ... They had:
1) Sugar free Lotus Seed Paste (Egg Yolk) Mooncake
2) Sugar free Lotus Seed Paste (Tropical Almond) Mooncake

That' what I am looking for! Before I made payment for this, I walked around the fair...there are more stalls selling low sugar mooncake...which is good for health conscious people. That's what made me suspicious of what ingredients Mei Xin used to make sugar free moon cake... (Harbour City sugar free mooncake is actually endorsed by health board)

Ok, here's the nutrition information:
Serving size: 1/4 mooncake (22.5g)
Average quantity per serving:
Energy: 386KJ / 92kcal
Carbohydrate Total: 13.3g
-sugars: 0.1g
-dietary fibre: less than 1g
Look harmless. But looking at the ingredients, they have hygrogenated glucose syrup.....considered sugar?

I shall eat and check myself to make sure that my sugar is in control. Yummy...cannot wait to eat the mooncake...:)

My Exercise Week... Twice this week!

I am not a big fan of exercise but because to keep myself healthy, I need to exercise. After attending the course, I told myself that I MUST exercise at least twice a week....well, so far....hmmm....think I am not that disciplined and diligent. It will be good if I exercise at least once a week. Anyway, I made myself exercise 2 days in a row!! :-p

Day 1: Was quite stressed out at work on Wed so decided to go East Coast for a jog alone. Before that, I tested my blood glucose level at around 4 pm. The meter was showing me 3.2 mmol!! Oh dear...already having hypo. Glad that I tested because I do not seem to have a strong feeling on this. Though I know very well that bread will not bring my sugar up very quickly but I think it will at least fill my stomach and slowly bring my sugar level up....I cannot do not have a strong feeling of hypo that I need some sugary drinks! By the time I left office and reach East Coast, it's already 7.20pm. I forgot to test my blood glucose before I started jogging. Anyway, just when I started to jog for about 5 minutes, it started to drizzle then rain... I was thinking should I carry on or should I stop and jog back. If I jog back, my exercise regime is disrupted. Still seeing people running in front of me....was thinking jogging in the rain should be fun. Hence, I carried on with the jog. Good thing is, the rain did not last long. The weather is back to normal and it's breezy for jogging.

On my way home, I bought my dinner at the zi char store at coffeeshop. Bought Hokkien mee..that is, yellow noodles cooked with dark sauce...**slurp** Well, that is not too healthy too because it's yellow noodles and what's more, dark sauce.... Before my dinner @9.32pm, I tested my glucose level. 3.4mmol. Hmm...Hypo again. Ok, then that pack of yellow noodle is good enough for me...hahaha....

Before I go to bed at around 11.30pm, I tested my glucose again to make sure it's ok. Now, the meter read 4.8mmol. Very much to the low side and I was wondering should I eat something before bed because I am worried that I will run into hypo in the middle of the night.. While I was thinking...I think I went into dreamland without additional food in my stomach....

Day 2: Wow! I had a very very good sleep!!!!!! I slept throughout and no hypo!! What could have happened is that I give myself 2 unit less of Glargine which I normally will give myself on Day 1.
Before my breakfast, I tested and my glucose meter read 7.2!! Gosh.....see how my sugar fluctuate just over a night. Throughout Day 2, I am disciplined. I watch what I eat, I did not give myself more insulin....what's more, I am going to burn away whatever I have eaten at the gym in the evening! Will be going for 1 hour aerobics class in the evening after work.... Feel so good with all these exercise and what's more, I do not have to worry about having high glucose level because my insulin will work very very well with the food I'll be eating for the next few days. No more worries of hyper for the time being ;-p

Green Tea and Coffee Reduce Blood Sugar?

Came across this video on Youtube. How true is it? Up to you to believe.

Getting To Know Glycemic Index

The glycemic index itself is a ranking (0-100 score, the lower the better) which classifies foods based on the degree they raise blood sugar levels during digestion. Foods with a high glycemic index (GI) tend to be absorbed rapidly, which cause a dramatic rise in blood sugar levels since they're digested and broken down very quickly.
By contrast, foods with a low GI only have a mild effect on insulin and blood sugar, take longer to digest because they aren't comprised of simple carbohydrates or refined sugars, and have a more balanced digestion with only gradual rise in blood sugar and insulin. This makes you feel fuller for a longer period of time, prevents insulin crashes and binges, and promote healthy lipid and triglyceride levels.

This site tells us which are the food that has high, medium or low GI. Useful site for me, who is Type 1.

http://www.southbeach-diet-plan.com/glycemicfoodchart.htm

Basically, the idea is that low GI is good for us. However, when we have hypo, low GI food is definitely a no no....

After My 5km run

Before my 5km run yesterday, I got the CGMS device removed. Gosh! So much relieved that this is removed. Else, I will be uncomfortable with my run.
Below will be my testing results before and after the run.

Pre-breakfast@ 5.58am 6.8 mmol. Gave myself 18 units of Glargine and 6 units of Humalog. Took 3 cream cracker biscuits and a bowl of Quaker oats.
After the run @ 9.45am 5.9 mmol. Went for snack with friends. Took 2 pieces of steamed yam cake and coffee "neat" (meaning, no milk and no sugar)
Pre-lunch @ 12.59 pm 7.4 mmol. Since I know that the run will make my sugar go low, I gave myself 8 units of Humalog eventhough the plate of fishball noodles looks like 3 CHO portions.
Pre-dinner @ 7.03 pm 4.2 mmol. Before this, I actually felt hypo @ around 5.45pm and took canned apple juice from vending machine. Gave myself 10 units of Humalog before dinner.
2.5 hrs later @ 9.32pm 3.3 mmol. Hypo again! Did not take sweet drinks this time round but I took around 4 pieces of raisin biscuits and a glass of milk.

After the run, I experienced hypo twice. If I run in the morning, the hypos will come late in the afternoon or evening. Since most the time I run in the evenings, then my hypo will come around 3-5 am in the morning. Maybe next time what I will need to do is to inject less Humalog for my dinner.

Fibre May Keep Diabetes At Bay?

Saw a report the other day on Yahoo website. There is this article that says that fibre MAY keep diabetes at bay. Wonder will is also help to reduce the glucose level in our body?

Food Regret....#1

As usual, went home for my dinner. My prepared this new dish which she bought from NTUC. It's fried fish nuggets. Frankly speaking, I like fried stuff and the moment I saw this, I picked one up and put into my mouth. Yummy!!!!
I think there about 6-7 pieces of it left on the plate and since I am the last person to have dinner, I conveniently finished all of them not forgetting my 1/4 plate of rice, boiled chicken feet soup (**slurp**) and vegetables. How can I leave out my post dinner fruits which is 4 slices of pear.
Before going to bed, I decided to give my finger a prick to check which is my sugar level like. To my horror, the numbers reflected on my meter is showing 16.3 mmol!!!!! Unbelieveable and shocked. Quickly gave myself another additional 3 more units of Humalog before I turn off the lights and go to bed. Kept thinking what went wrong to have such high numbers......
This morning, before breakfast, checked my glucose level again. This time round, it's 7.3mmol. I still cannot believe what happened the night before and I suspected it could be the fish nuggets. Took out the packet of fish nuggets out from the fridge and true enough, this could be the reason for high glucose reading the night before.

Look at the Total Carbohydrate per 100gm. It's 28! And I took around 6-7 pieces of it. Furthermore, 1 of the ingredient is sugar. Does this already mean that it overshot my daily 15 portions of carbohydrates? My god!
This lesson tells me that I should not be greedy and eat in moderation. Maybe best is, I reject it right away.

Visit to a Support Group: Touch Diabetes Center

I have had diabetes for 10 years. Did not really join any support groups or mixed around with people with diabetes. Hiding in my own world, trying to accept my condition as well as managing this condition all by myself. If not for my doctor, I would not have really get connected with other people having the same condition as me. If not for my new found friend, I would not have known that diabetic can eat normally like any other normal people without a super strict diet. This new friend is kind enough to ask me join the support group that he is with. Well, I joined the membership. With the 2 year membership, it came with a free meter!
Yesterday, I went down to Touch Diabetes Support (TDS) to pay my membership fee as well as collect my free meter. I selected Roche Accu chek Advantage meter. Been using the older model for a long time and this new meter came in just handy.

Stayed for a while at the center and my friend showed me around the place. It's nice cosy place and there is a activity area whereby activites and support group meetings are conducted. Just happened that TDS has organised an event for young kids (with diabetes) when I was there. It's an effort with the Boy Scouts to let young kids know that they too can be active in sports and games. Guess the kids must have had lots of fun yesterday and the lucky draw event was well received too.
I got to know this lady in TDS who has the same condition as me. Heard that she is a baker. Wow, I wanted to learn baking for the longest time but have no idea how to bake and what type of sugar to put for the cakes or cookies. I need to learn from her so that I can bake my own cakes/cookies. It's going to be a healthy one too :)
There are lots of other activities that TDS has lined up for people with diabetes or for their family members. By coming here, I know that I am not alone with this. There are really many other people with the same condition as I am and they can be so near to me.
If time permits, I will try to join them with their activites, especially now I know where they are located ^_^ oh, here is their website address: www.diabetessupport.org.sg

My 2nd Attempt At Power Walking

Last Saturday, I made a second attempt on power walking. Did not really convinced that by walking > 10km will really make my glucose level go so low for 2 days.
Before I took my breakfast, tested by sugar level. My god! It's 12.2 mmol!!! What happened? I did my glucose test before I go bed the day before and the meter read 5.2 mmol! How come my sugar level shot up so high in just a night? Really no idea. But anyway, I have to give myself more fast acting to bring it down. Gave my usual 20 units of Glargin but I gave myself 8 units of Humalog. In the morning, ate 2 slices of plain bread and a bowl of plain cereal. If you can see from the picture, it's really plain lor. So for people who like lots of flavour to their food, this kind of breakfast is not what they are looking for. For me, I am used to it. So, does not make any difference to me. In fact, I feel healthier eating this way ^_^
Drove myself to East Coast Park for my walk this time round. It's drizzling slightly in the morning. I tested myself again in the car to see what is my sugar level. Now, the meter read 15.6mmol. I'ts high but that was just an hour after I took my plain breakfast. While waiting for my friend to arrive, I ordered a cup of Long Black coffee from McDonalds. Eversince I have diabetes, I have never tried any other types of coffee other than Americano or Super Black coffee (no sugar, no creamer, no milk). Lots of people said it's bitter and indeed it is. Not the type of coffee that anyone will like. I would like to try Latte or Cuppucino but well, I better stick to my Americano coffee. My friend finally arrived and she ordered McGriddles for breakfast. I am soooo tempted to buy McMuffins or hashbrown to munch but I really need to control myself, else, I will really loose control of my sugar level.
Finally, the rain stopped and we started with our power walk. We walked from McDonalds all the way to the Sea food center and we detour back to walk all the way to the end of Fort Road. From Fort Road, we walked back to McDonalds. On the way back to McDonalds, I felt slightly that hypo is coming....But I am not too sure....I actually intended to wait till I get back to my car to test but I think I cannot wait till I reach my car. Plus, I am worried that my friend (who does not know I am diabetic) will panic if I should faint while walking. I decided to stop at 7 Eleven to get some "goodie" for myself. As usual, I got myself my favourite, ice cream!!! I decided to tell my friend my condition. Actually, I was expecting that her reaction will be big but surprisingly, she was calm about it. Then I know why.... because her auntie is having the same condition as me and she has been injecting too!
We have walked for almost 2.5 hours. Time for lunch! We decided to go to Terminal 3 for lunch. My friend suggested Popeye Restaurant in T3. Since, I have not tried that before, I agreed to it. She was surprised that I actually agreed to it because I have always rejected Kentucky Fried Chicken or rather fried chicken served in fast food restaurant. Again, when I reached T3, I tested myself in my car. This time round, the meter shows me 8.8 mmol. Hmmm....ok....better slightly. Now, go for my fried chicken meal!
I ordered a chicken burger set which include fries and water. Felt really guilty eating that fried chicken burger and guess my sugar level might have already gone up again. Sighz..... Immediately after my lunch, I gave myself a jab of Humalog of 10 units.
> 2 hours later, I checked again. The meter shows me 11.0mmol..... What a mess!
Went Chen Fu Ji and ordered their famous frice rice for dinner. Jab myself 12 units of Humalog to make sure that my sugar level will drop to a acceptable level. I proceed to go for drinks after dinner. Well, what can I drink when I go for drinks at drinking places? Alcohol!!! Ok, I have to admit, I am a social drinker who will mostly stick to red wine or beer. Ordered a pint of Heineken and I finished it. Felt guilty again. So, when I reached home, I tested. 7.7 mmol. Phew......
Think power walking did not really do anything special to my sugar level this time round. I will still continue with my power walk but maybe I need to rest a while because my leg hurts! ^_^

My Senses To High Sugar

Been pretty busy with work these days and that's why not been updating this blog for a while.
This morning, I suddenly have this craving for fried carrot cake (dark version). Ever since diagnosed with diabetes, I have not been eating dark carrot cake. Normally I eat the white version. I will even "warn" my friends not to buy the dark one. The dark version somehow is too sweet because of the sweet soy sauce they add when preparing this dish. Just do not know why I have this craving. Maybe I am too stressed with work.....
Took the whole packet of the carrot cake and I can feel something is happening to my legs. It's not numb and it's not pain. It's just a kind of feeling I get on my legs and somehow I know it's telling me that my sugar level is high! So after finishing my carrot cake, went to inject 2 more units of fast acting insulin, Humalog. Slowly, the strange feeling on my legs is gone.
Well, today I did not bring my meter so I am not able to provide the sugar level but this feeling on the legs is already a warning sign to me.
Some people might have different reactions to high sugar. For me, it must definitely be this feeling on my legs.

Resisting Temptation

Had a gathering yesterday with friends at a hip restaurant somewhere in town. The place served western food and of course not forgetting the wide variety of desserts.
While my friend are still deciding what to order for dinner, I am busy myself. What am I busy with? Testing my blood at the table. Mentioned before that I do all these tests and injection in the toilet. But this time round, I did my test not in the toilet but at the dining table. Of course, still did not do it openly, I hide my meters under the table. Well, at least, that is the very first step for me to do this outside toilet and its in a hip eating place.
My pre-meal reading was high: 15.7 mmol. Guess it's the piece of wafer I took before I left the office. Later on, I inject myself with additional 3 more units of insulin.
These are what we ordered the following for dinner:

Seabass with coconut coating and sweet potato paste

Beetroot soup (drank only a sip. they said very sweet!)

Chicken pasta (My favourite among the rest. That's also where I get my carbo. Cannot leave without it )

Sticky prawns is our starter

With my super high pre-meal readings, I eat everything in moderation. I finished up the late of chicken pasta. :)

After dinner, they wanted desserts. All desserts they have in the menu looks yummy and feels like sinking my teeth into them. Sigh! Well, I can only "admire" them from a distance. So sad. Look at the desserts they ordered:

Not sure what is this. Looks like carrot cake with ice cream. Does not look really appealing to me :)

This is mango pudding. Heard its real sweet

This is the one that I want to try. There's ice cream stuffed inside and with chocolate coated over it. Looks super yummy **slurp**

Good to see but not for my stomach. Over the years, I have mentally trained myself to resist any temptations of sweet stuffs like: ice cream, desserts and cakes (my favourite blueberry cakes). So, when I have hypo, I will hunt down places with my favourites. When people see me eating these, do not be surprised. It's because I need them!

When I reached home and tested my glucose level, it's 4.6 mmol.

Bittergourd Tea Good For Us?

Many years before, someone told me that bittergourd tea is good for diabetic patients. It will help control the sugar level. Went to buy a box in the supermarket and have been drinking it since. Not a regular drinker of this beverage but I do believe it does have some effects on sugar level control. No harm trying it.

When is the real hypo?

My symptom of knowing when hypo kicks in is when I can feel that my heart beats faster and I am short of breathe when that happens. My vision will be slightly blurred and I feel weak. If hypo happens in the middle of the night, I will usually will have cold sweat even if I am sleeping in air-conditioned room. These are pretty obvious symtoms which I will immediately grab something sweet to eat without checking how low I am.
Few days ago, I experienced something pretty similar, but mild ones, a few hours after my meal. I have my doubts this time. Reason is, I did not inject more units of insulin and my meals are the usual. At that point of time, I really thought hypo is coming after me again! But when I am in doubt, to play safe, I better check my glucose level. After another painful poke, the meter showed me 6 mmol. Hmmmm.....that is pretty normal. Why do I have that strange feeling? Is that a sign telling me that I will have it when I am deep in my dreams again. I took the decision to eat a little bit of cheesecake which was still left in my fridge. Everything was fine and the next day reading is normal.
Today, went grocery shopping with mom after lunch. I took porridge for lunch and inject my usual amount of Humalog. Around 3 plus, I can feel it again!!! But still not very sure if this is the real or fake one. I really have the urge to buy something sweet (like ice cream) to eat. Yeah!! I can indulge in sweet stuff! But since the feeling is mild, I am just worried that this is another false alarm. Damn, no meter with me and I cannot check. Can only do it when I am back home. That is the inconvenience of not having a meter around with me. Someone must invent some small and compact meter which will not create a stir when diabetic patient is testing their blood at public places. The best is, no blood can be seen.
When I am back home (It's around 4 pm and I still can drive myself home), quickly rushed to get my blood tested. The meter showed 3 mmol! Oh, it's the real hypo! Quickly took the piece of Prima Deli pancake which I bought earlier. I know I should eat something sweet and fast reacting but I really feel like eating the pancake eventhough I know it will be slow to react to my hypo. Well, I know the pancake will not create a super high as compared to drinking coke. So, I can tell that my pre-meal readings will be safe as well. Glad to say, my pre-meal is 6 mmol when I tested.
Maybe this might not be the right way to treat my hypo. But it seems like I still know my body well. What I need is a compact and blood-less meter so that I can test in public and eat safely.

A Peek At What I Eat

Wanted to share what I eat today.

Morning
Eversince I was diagnosed diabetic, my mom has been preparing unpolished rice porridge for me. Whenever I tell my friends that I eat unpolished rice in the morning, they will give me a shock look and tell me: "It's blend and don't taste good. How can you eat it? How is it prepared?"
Well, every night, my mom will prepare the unpolished rice and put it in the slow cooker. She will include dried cuttlefish and red dates to add flavour to the porridge. In the middle of the night (when on the way to toilet), she will turn on the slow cooker and let it cook. By the time, she wakes up in the morning, she will turn off the slow cooker. And it's ready for all of us to eat as breakfast!
There are actually lots of health benefits related to unpolished rice:
1. Provides all necessary carbohydrates requirements.
2. Rich in fibers.
3. Helps control blood sugar.
4. Helps control cholesterol.
5. It is a body building food.
6. Beneficial for stomach and intestinal ulcers and for diarrhea. It is easily digested starch food.
7. Because of the mineral content, it supplies important nutrient for the hair, teeth, nails, muscles and bones.
So can you imagine, I have been eating this "blend and tasteless" porridge for 10 years!

Pre-breakfast reading (7.10am): 6.5 mmol

When I reach office around 8.30am , my colleague bought McDonalds McMuffin. Took half of it for my tea break :) Very sinful, yes I know but I will be hungry if I do not eat anything. I know that I will have my "tea break" everyday so I normally will add 1 more unit of Humalog to my morning shot.

Reading before McMuffin gets into my stomach: 10.8 mmol

Lunch

My colleagues wanted to eat Chicken Rice so we went to our favourite Chicken Rice hunt @ Yishun Central. Yummy, ate a plate of chicken rice and of course I only eat chicken breast which is the healthiest. Other than being the healthiest, I think it is the easiest to eat cause no bones :)

Pre-lunch reading (around 12pm) : 7.2 mmol

My lunch shot is alittle different. Usually we cannot decide what we want to eat for lunch. Therefore, I am unable to know how much insulin I need. Normally I will jab myself immediately after my lunch when I am back to the office. For today, since I have taken chicken rice, I jab 1 more additional unit of Humalog because chicken rice has lots of fats which might increase my glucose level!!!

Towards 6pm, my stomach is already making lots of noise. Feel like eating the 1/4 piece of sugarless mooncake which I brought but dare not. I am afraid that it will bring my sugar level up just before my dinner which will result in me injecting even more insulin to cover for that.

Dinner

Reached home around 8pm. Today's special is homemade claypot rice. Not really made from claypot but looks like claypot rice. I always like the food that my mom prepared (except fish). Yummy!!

Pre-dinner reading: 3.9 mmol (ooppsss...almost hypo)
Post-dinner reading @ 10.30pm: 17.9!!! (what happened??!!!!!)

Oh my god! My post meal reading is soooooo high! What happened? Could it be the chilli ikan billis I took during dinner or the slices of green apples which I took earlier cause my blood glucose level to shoot up this high? Anyway, immediately I gave myself another jab to bring down my sugar level. Hopefully.....

Happy Birthday To Me!

Yesterday was my birthday. As mentioned in my earlier post, my mom will buy a cake which will never go into my stomach. This really happened yesterday...hahaha.... But I went to buy something that can make it into my stomach, that is, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaves Chicago Cheesecake! This time round, I am careful. Before I eat the cake, I measure myself and below are the readings:
15/9 9.15pm: 5.6 mmol
15/9 11.30pm: 6.4 mmol
16/9 7am: 8.3 mmol
Ok, seems like the reaction of insulin on the 1/2 cheesecake is slow but somewhat still acceptable to me. So, in the future, I should just take 1/2 of the cheesecake when I have the craving. :)

What Is My #1 Fear For Diabetes?

Few months ago, my friend asked me this question: What is your greatest fear for diabetes?
It's not the physcial pain of injection or blood testing. It's not the extra medical bills that I need to foot. My fear is the complications that one might have because of uncontrolled diabetes.
Many complications might happen if there is no good control of diabetes. To me, the most scary one will be kidney failure. Kidney failure patients need to go for dialysis every week and the medical bills for each dialysis is not cheap. Futuremore, it will disrupt one's work. It's complicated. Therefore, I tell myself I must make sure I eat well and make sure that I do not have hypers or so many hypos.
So coincidental, my doctor also asked me the same question when I go for my last consultation. Told her exactly how I feel.

The last consultation, my HbA1c has been average, 6.8%. 2 problems that doctor noticed:
(1) I do not record my readings -> I really do not like to record down. Don't know why. Think I need lots of discipline.
(2) I do not gain weight and I am always conservative on my food. What is conservative? That means, eat only food that I consider safe or rather, which do not increase my blood glucose level --> Not a big fan of food. The saying goes: I do not eat for the sake of food but I eat for the sake of living. So, my food consumption can be boring. Of course once in a while, I will have cravings for unhealthy food like crackers or raisin biscuits but I limit myself to these food.

When my friends are having desserts, I need to reject it. So they thought I am so health conscious and that is why I am so skinny. However, they do not know the struggle in me. How much I wanted to eat dessert with them but I cannot. I have to always tell them:"I don't like to eat desserts". What a liar I am.

Finally Mooncake

It's been almost 10 years since I last tasted mooncakes. Not that I am a big fan of mooncake but on Mid Autumn Festival, other than carrying lantern (which I am too old for that), eating mooncake will let you have the festive mood.
Mooncakes are sort of "unhealthy" food because of its ingredients. Lotus paste has high sugar content. Egg yolk will lead to high cholestrol. Eating too much of mooncake, I think, is not really healthy for old folks and of cause for me. I read an article this year on sugar-less mooncake. Am determind to get it this year.
Yesterday went to get a box of sugar-less mooncake. Will the mooncake taste blend since it is sugar-less? Nope, in fact not. They have added this ingredient called Maltitol to replace sugar when making this mooncake. Therefore, though it is called sugar-less, there is a certain amount of "sweetness" in the mooncake. According to the salesgirl, this mooncake has been recognised with the 'Healthier Choice' tick. Furthermore, the health authorities has approved that it is suitable for diabetic patients.
Today is Mid Autumn Festival. Yeah! I finally have the chance to eat mooncake. Before I enjoy the mooncake for breakfast, I have to ensure that it will not raise my sugar level. So, today I must take my blood test. These are my readings:
Before mooncake: 8.3 mmol
2 hours after mooncake: 7.4 mmol
5 hours after mooncake: 6.4 mmol
Ok, seems like the mooncake is really safe for my consumption. It did not really cause my sugar level to go sky high. Of course I still need to watch out and not eat too many.

Mooncake with 5 grains

Sugar-less mooncake

Something which I have to mention because of this mooncake. After my 2 hours test, I went out with my mom. Around noon time, she wanted to take vegetarian lunch. So we went to a vegetarian restaurant. Since I need to monitor the effects of my insulin on the mooncake, I decided to delay my lunch. Did not bring my meter out and furthermore, even if I bring, it is not convenient for me to take it out and test blood. Hence, I can only do it when I am back home. So, by the time I reach home and take my test, it is already 2.30pm. It's a late lunch all because of the mooncake.

Cheesecake & Me

Eversince I tried the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaves Chicago Cheesecake, I have fallen in love with it. There is a concern here......aren't cheesecake super sweet? Well, I think it is sweet. I first tried it when it was winter in Shanghai. Apparently, when I tested my blood sugar after eating the cheesecake, my blood sugar did not go sky high! Phew! What a relief. In fact, whenever I go winter countries, my blood sugar will always go low. That means, I will have more hypos eventhough I eat the same amount of food and injecting the same amount of insulin.
When I came back to Singapore, I will still buy cheesecake to eat whenever I am unhappy with my work. Seems like the cheesecake would be able to make me feel better. Recently, my friend got me Chicago cheesecake. I took my test 2 hours later and seems like my sugar level is quite all right. However, to my horror, the next sugar test actually shot up real high! Guess the reaction of cheesecake to my sugar level is slow. Because of this, I need to monitor my blood sugar consistently for these few days to make sure it does not go roller coaster ride.
After I was diagnosed with diabetes, I have not been able to eat any birthday cake at all. I can only blow out candles, make a wish and cut the cake. The cake never went into my stomach. My birthday is coming. This time round, maybe I will treat myself again to half a slice of Chicago cheesecake :)
